Malaysia is one of the growing nations in South-East Asia. Malaysia, with a population of 22 million, was formed in 1963, when Malaya joined the British colonies of Singapore, British North Borneo, and Sarawak.
Malaya, which gained independence from the British rule in
1957, comprised of 13 states. With Singapore broken away in 1965, Malaysia now has 15 states, 13 of which are those of former Malaya in the Malay Peninsula and two (Sabah and Sarawak) are in Borneo. Sabah, formerly known as British North Borneo, occupies the northern part of the island of Borneo, and Sarawak is on the west coast of Borneo.
Malays, Chinese and East Indians are the three main ethnic groups of Malaysia, with over half of the population being Malays, one-third being Chinese and 8% being East Indians.
